This is a highly coveted classic Mid Century Modern chest of drawers designed by Architects John and Sylvia Reid for Stagg’s breakthrough C range in the 1950s.
The C Range was intended to be bought by young couples starting out together during the optimistic and idealistic post-war period. The Modernist design movement was founded on the concept that they were designing for a better way of living, drawing inspiration from the future instead of the past, to make life easier and happier for families who had been through so much horror during the war years. The furniture of this time was designed with clean crisp lines and natural materials using proportions found in nature for their beauty, efficiency and functionality. They were built at a time when furniture was intended to be passed down through the family and the quality reflects this.
The chest features solid wood drawers faced with high quality walnut veneer. A light oak version of these drawers was also produced however this walnut version is the rarer design. This is an investment piece which is likely to increase in value due to the increasing interest in Mid Century design amongst collectors. This has been confirmed by the Oxfordshire auction house Mallams.
Please be aware, this is an authentic vintage item. It is very well made and in great condition for its age however please remember you are buying a little piece of history so signs of ware are to be expected. This set of drawers has a small chip to the facing on the right side back corner but this is hardly noticeable.
