I currently have four of the original Polyside Chairs designed over 50 years ago in 1963 by Robin Day, the award winning British architect. This is a very special and celebrated icon of British Mid Century Modernist design. It was the very first chair in the world to be designed and made using Injection formed Polyurethane. Prior to being used for this chair, although Polyurethane had been developed in 1937, it had been used in a very limited fashion although notably as an aircraft coating during World War Two. Robin Day took this new material and, combined with his brilliance for furniture design, worked for three years perfecting a design and moulding technique that would allow the material to be put to use on a huge scale at an affordable price and of a lasting quality. The design was so radically different from what had come before that it became shorthand for a fresh and new way of life, something the post war generation desperately wanted. In the same way that Americans had adopted the new fibreglass chair designs of the Eames’, the British took this design to their hearts and it made its way into hospitals, halls, schools and offices across the land and then on across the world.
I’m so happy I found these and I will be happier still to find them all a new home where they will be cherished and respected for the design icon they truly are.
