A beautiful set of four high quality dining chairs covered in vintage teal velvet designed by Gordon Russell and featured in the 1951 Festival of Britain.
Gordon Russell initially trained in woodwork in order to be able to repair antique furniture in his fathers restaurant in the Cotswolds town of Broadway. He soon began designing his own pieces and quickly became known for his high quality work. His designs were picked up by the British government and became the basis for the utility furniture range that was only available to newly weds in the post world-war 2 period of furniture rationing. Gordon Russell was made Head of the newly formed Industrial Design Council and tasked with helping rebuild Britain. The Industrial Design council is still around today helping design all public environments but it is now known simply as the Design Council. Needless to say, Gordon Russell’s designs from this era are simply beautifully made and will be a great investment that will last another lifetime.
